RSL History
1918
Event 01
The Wonthaggi RSL (Returned & Services League) Sub-Branch was established in 1918 to commemorate the First World War and support veterans. It initially operated from the Wonthaggi Picture Theatre (later the Plaza Theatre) which was acquired by the Wonthaggi District Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Nurses Co-operative, with the RSL as a significant subscriber. By the 1950s, the RSL secured a site on Graham Street and constructed a new building, which opened in 1956. Today, the RSL serves as a welfare center and community entertainment venue.

1920
The Wonthaggi District Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Nurses Co-operative formed in 1920 for the purpose of acquiring and operating the Wonthaggi Picture Theatre, (later known as the Plaza Theatre). The local sub-branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA) was a significant subscriber of funds, and it used the theatre building as a meeting venue. By the early post-War years, a decision had been made to sell the Theatre after which the League is believed to have rented a premises nearby.
1954
Event 03
By 1954, resources became available to construct a new club, and a site was secured on Graham Street. The new building was designed by architects R M & M H King and the builders the Johnson Bros. The construction is also believed to have involved war veteran labour.
Event 04
1956

In October 1965 the League became known as the Returned Services League of Australia (RSL).Today the building continues to be used as a welfare centre for ex-service members and as a community entertainment centre. This place/object may be included in the Victorian Heritage Register pursuant to the Heritage Act 2017.
1968
Event 05
Wonthaggi’s history is deeply intertwined with coal mining. Founded in 1910 as a State Coal Mine town to supply coal for Victoria’s railways, it became a significant industrial center. Although coal mining operations ceased in 1968, the town’s history is preserved at the State Coal Mine Historic Reserve.

Wonthaggi RSL Sub-Committee continues to be a vital part in supporting veterans and their families and the larger community.
